First Choice Community Healthcare Receives Grant from BCBSNM to Help Improve Kids’ Health by Providing Access to Healthier Choices

Albuquerque, NM (January 29, 2016) – First Choice Community Healthcare announced today that it received a $12,275 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) through its Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative. Because of our commitment to providing affordable access to healthy food and healthy cooking classes, we are now partnering with BCBSNM whose Healthy Kids, Healthy Families vision is to help improve the health of youth in local communities.

“We’re proud to give our support to First Choice Community Healthcare as a Healthy Kids, Healthy Families partner,” said Janice Torrez, Vice President of External Affairs and Chief of Staff for BCBSNM. “Through its work, we expect to see measurable improvement in children’s health by educating youth about diabetes prevention and providing them affordable access to healthy food and healthy cooking classes.”

First Choice will use the grant to continue providing affordable access to healthy food and healthy cooking classes at its South Valley Health Commons. For the third year, patients and community members will be able to purchase small or large bags of local produce at the Health Commons for only $3 or $5 per week, subsidized by this grant, to support a healthy diet. In addition, the grant will be used to continue a monthly healthy cooking class in which First Choice doctors provide diabetes education and prevention tips.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue to provide our patients with fresh, local produce, at a very low cost, because of this grant from BCBSNM,” said Dr. Will Kaufman, Director of Community Health and Wellness at First Choice. “We want to make it easier for patients to follow our advice to stay healthy by eating lots of fresh vegetables.”
