Our plan in the South Valley is to build a permanent campus for Health Leadership High School; an early childhood development center; a wellness center; a four acre farm and food hub; a farm-to-table-style restaurant; and an enterprise lease space. We selected these community development projects with the goal of investing in those enterprises which hold the best promise of eliminating inequity as well as being financially sustainable through collaboration- thereby generating a wellness ecosystem. Each of the component parts of the South Valley Community Commons will be located within a built environment that promotes community engagement, active living, healthy eating and collaboration by design.
With help from the UNM School of Architecture and Planning, Con Alma Foundation and the CDC REACH Grant through Presbyterian Healthcare Services, First Choice Community Healthcare facilitated a series of seven design workshops with 107 participants, including neighbors, partner organizations, coalition members, stakeholders and interested community members. The following report provides a record of design ideas and invaluable insights generated during this five month period from April to September 2015.
