Bernalillo County Proclaims May is First Choice Month

News release link. The First Choice health system started in the South Valley and South Broadway neighborhoods and now provides primary medical, dental and behavioral health care, and WIC in Central New Mexico.  The system has a total of eight health centers and one school-based health center, at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque’s South Valley.

The first open house will take place on Wednesday, May 9 from 4-6 pm at the Broadway Clinic located at 1401 William Street SE, featuring free food, balloons and tours of the facility, which opened in 2011 after a $3.1 million addition/renovation.  The South Valley Family Health Commons will hold its Open House on May 22 from 5-7 pm at 2001 N. Centro Familiar SW, and will feature screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure, dental and other health education.

The Open Houses are community celebrations to help spread the word that First Choice welcomes new patients and is striving to provide a more patient-centered health care home model of care.

As part of a network of federally-qualified health centers across the country, First Choice plays a key role in providing primary health care to people with and without insurance.  Patients with no insurance can qualify for discounts for the care they receive based on their income and family size. First Choice has nearly doubled its capacity over the past five years, and the growth rate is expected to continue.

First Choice actively seeks resources and partnerships with local, state and federal agencies to continue building its capacity to serve the needs of the residents in the communities it serves.  With more than 50% of its board members being patients of the health centers, the board is committed to ensuring the highest quality care and best community service to all patients.

The county commission read the proclamation into the record at the council meeting on Tuesday, May 8. Commission Chairman Art De La Cruz noted that First Choice is a great service provider and employer for the region.
