Edgewood Proclaims April First Choice Month

First Choice Mountain & Valley Regional Health Center is holding a free community fair to celebrate the health system’s 40th anniversary on Saturday, April 21 from 10-4.  The fair will feature activities for the kids, shade and lemonade for the adults, and hot dogs on the grill for all who bring a canned food item.

The First Choice health system started in 1972 and provides primary medical, dental and behavioral health care, and WIC services.  The system has a total of eight health centers, including the one in Edgewood and one school-based health center, at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque.

The First Choice Mountain & Valley Regional Health Center in Edgewood has been open since  April 2003 and serves patients from Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Torrance counties. Local township & county-wide citizens worked to bring the First Choice Clinic to the East Mountains with the help of state legislators. Patients come all the way from Albuquerque, El Dorado, the Pecos, Stanley, Vaughn & Mountainaire to be seen in a friendly, relaxed, rural setting with Practitioners who enjoy the same rural lifestyle as their patients.

The Edgewood First Choice Clinic is unique as a Rural Healthcare Clinic in the First Choice Clinic Family and has experienced continuous growth in its nine years. The Center provides both after-hours and weekend appointments for patients in need.

As part of a network of federally-qualified health centers across the country, First Choice plays a key role in providing primary health care to people with and without insurance.  The growth rate is expected to continue.

First Choice actively seeks resources and partnerships with local, state and federal agencies to continue building its capacity to serve the needs of the residents in the communities it serves.  With more than 50% of its board members being patients of the health centers, the board is committed to ensuring the highest quality care and best community service to all patients.
