Aug. 11-15 National Health Center Week

Events include Back to School shot clinics, Shots for Tots, sports physicals, as well as a unique opportunity to gather comments from some of our 56,000 patients through the use of a conversation wall – a mobile chalk board for patients to post their input from the lobby.

The theme for NHCW 2014 is “"America's Health Centers - Local Engines for Healthier Communities." As local community-directed non-profit businesses, Health Centers employ hundreds of thousands of individuals at about 9,000 delivery sites across the nation. In Central New Mexico, First Choice employs nearly 400 people. Our 8 health centers and one school based health center deliver high quality, cost effective, accessible care while serving as critical economic engines helping to power our local economies.

Community Health Centers go beyond the provision of medicine to not only prevent illness, but address the root factors that cause poor health. We know that poor nutrition, unemployment, stress, and lack of safe places to be physically active can affect a person’s whole health.

“At our health center we are proud to offer wellness programs including a fitness center, organic local produce baskets, healthy cooking classes, massage, meditation, you name it,” says CEO Bob DeFelice. “Our approach is to look at the whole health of the person and their life beyond the walls of our health center. By focusing on prevention we can give our patients the right tools to stay healthy and productive, and out of the hospital.”

Health Centers have been in existence for over 45 years and have compiled a significant record of success:

  • Reducing ethnic health disparities nationwide, even in the poorest communities
  • Producing $24 billion in annual health system savings
  • Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the ER
  • Generating a system of preventive medicine that patients use regularly to stay healthy
