October is Health Literacy Month

WHEREAS, good health is essential to the quality of life of Bernalillo County residents, to happy families, healthy children, and educational success; and

WHEREAS, good health is an important component of a productive workforce and leads to lower health care and social service costs; and

WHEREAS, health literacy is the ability to understand and act upon health information; and

WHEREAS, in a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, almost 42 percent of patients could not understand directions for taking medication properly; 26 percent were unable to understand information regarding their next appointment; and 59.5 percent could not understand a standard informed consent document; and

WHEREAS, other studies show that many patients cannot read well enough to navigate the health system and demonstrate that inadequate health literacy and poor reading skills predict mortality and cardiovascular health among the elderly; and

WHEREAS, Bernalillo County government strives to educate its residents about the important of public health prevention as an investment in our residents that will produce a happier, healthier population.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognizes October as

Health Literacy Month

and in support of health literacy will continue to promote the importance of public health prevention as a cost-saving investment in its residents.
