Valencia County Proclaims First Choice Community Healthcare Week

Los Lunas – First Choice has opened a new health center in Los Lunas offering primary medical and dental care to the community. The ribbon-cutting and grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, September 29, from 10 am to 1 pm.

The new 22,000 square foot facility is located behind the Village of Los Lunas Municipal Complex at 145 Don Pasqual NW off Main Street. Providers started seeing patients in the new center on September 10.

The new center will replace the old modular buildings on Highway 314 and will more than double capacity to serve patients in the region.

The center will feature 20 exam rooms and 10 dental chairs, and be modeled after the South Valley Family Health Commons. When fully staffed, the center will have the capacity to serve almost 15,000 patients per year. First Choice anticipates hiring eight new providers and additional support staff.

The Los Lunas and Belen Health Centers serve all of Valencia County and patients from southern Bernalillo County and parts of Socorro County.  The First Choice Health Center in Los Lunas has been open since 1976. Patients come from as far away as Veguita to be seen in a friendly, relaxed, rural setting with practitioners who enjoy the same rural lifestyle as their patients.

First Choice is a community health center system that serves community members with and without insurance, on a sliding scale according to their ability to pay. The First Choice health system started in 1972 and provides primary medical, dental and behavioral health care, and WIC services in many of its locations.  The system has a total of eight health centers and one school-based health center, at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque’s South Valley.

The Los Lunas First Choice Health Center has experienced continuous growth in its 36 years. The growth rate is expected to continue. As part of a network of federally-qualified health centers across the country, First Choice plays a key role in providing primary health care to people with and without insurance.

First Choice actively seeks resources and partnerships with local, state and federal agencies to continue building its capacity to serve the needs of the residents in the communities it serves.  With more than 50% of its board members being patients of the health centers, the board is committed to ensuring the highest quality care and best community service to all patients.

The Health Center offers extended hours for patient convenience. The Health Center is open Monday through Thursday 7 am to 6 pm and Friday 7 am to 5 pm. For an appointment, please call 505-865-4618.
