NM Legislature Honors First Choice


Senator Eric Griego (D-Bernalillo, Valencia, 14) sponsored the Memorial and was joined by Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino (D-Bernalillo, 12); Senator Linda Lopez (D-Bernalillo, 11); Senator Michael Sanchez (D-Valencia, 29); Senator Dede Feldman (D-Bernalillo, 13) and Senator Sue Wilson Beffort (R-Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Torrance, 19) who all spoke in favor of the Memorial, which passed unanimously.

Each of the senators who spoke have First Choice health centers in their districts. They emphasized the affordable access that First Choice provides to their constituents, particularly those without health insurance, but also to those who do have insurance and choose First Choice because of the quality and convenience.

The senators also highlighted the efficiency of First Choice and the organization’s track record of partnering with many entities to maximize resources for the betterment of communities. One of those collaborations – with the Nurse Advice Line- was singled out for mention.

Senate Memorial 14 recognized the value and contributions to New Mexico that First Choice Community Healthcare provides. The model of healthcare delivery that First Choice is pioneering is seen as the future for expanding healthcare to all Americans under the Affordable Healthcare Act.  

First Choice is part of a national system of Community Health Centers that offer a ready infrastructure to provide medical homes for the nation’s population.

Established in 1972 First Choice Community Healthcare operates 8 Health Centers and 1 School-Based Health Clinic strategically located throughout the mid-Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico.  First Choice provided a medical care home for 60,000 individuals and families who came to care more than 268,000 times in 2010.  First Choice provides primary medical, dental, behavioral health and WIC services.
