New First Choice Health Center to Serve Thousands More

The new location, at 1401 William Street SE, is a renovated state building. At about 16,000 square feet, the building includes patient examination rooms, waiting areas, education/conference rooms and office space for providers and staff. The new building will allow First Choice to serve more medical patients as well as clients of WIC.

First Choice has been providing service in South Broadway for 25 years and provided approximately 16,400 patient visits and 17,400 WIC visits in 2010.

District two Commissioner Art De La Cruz helped arrange for the lease agreement between First Choice and Bernalillo County. “Healthcare is one of the most valuable resources that we can help provide for the community. With the additional space and tools, I know the community will be heavily utilizing this clinic and the services it provides. It is my pleasure to work with an agency like First Choice that gives so much back to the community,” says De La Cruz.

First Choice Community Healthcare Board of Directors President Paul Luna agrees that project collaboration was essential. “This is how we should be working together in today’s environment and in the future. It’s a great example of how federal, state and county governments can partner with the private sector-- maximizing our collective resources for the benefit of communities in need.”

The South Broadway location is the newest of the eight First Choice Health Centers in and around Bernalillo County, three of which provide dental services along with medical care. First Choice is the state’s largest contract provider of WIC services. The system provides care to everyone, regardless of whether they have medical insurance.

Renovations to the original building, built in the 1970s, cost about $3.2 million. Medical equipment and furniture accounted for an additional $400,000. The money came from federal stimulus funds and from First Choice Community Healthcare.
